Beach Plum

Today we’d like to introduce you to the Beach Plum!

Photo of the flowers and buds from a Beach Plum...tiny white flowers, green leaves and woody stems.

Prunus maritima is native to coastal North America from Canada to Virginia. Due to coastal development, it isn’t nearly as common as it once was. Beach Plum is a drought-tolerant shrub. It has a beautiful bloom that starts in April or May. Ours started blooming in early mid-May.

Beach Plums are resistant to salt spray, so help prevent coastal erosion. They are popular among bees, butterflies, moths and birds. They produce a fruit (the Beach Plum) that feeds wildlife, but also can be turned into jam!
