Nannyberry
Today’s native plant is Nannyberry!
Viburnum lentago is an adaptable native that does well in a variety of conditions from shady stream banks to drier open sunny areas. It can be found in northeast and northern mid-west states of the US, along with parts of southern Canada. In May, it has white flowers and in the fall, it has beautiful burgundy leaves. When multiple plants are near each other, it produces edible berries that can be used in jams.
It’s a great plant for wildlife as many birds and mammals eat the berries, and some eat the bark and leaves. The spring azure butterfly, as well as many small moths, use the nannyberry as a host plant.
